New Tales of China's Dinosaurs
The field in front of Hovy’s home is China was light green like the fluff of a tennis ball. Beyond the field a few trees dotted the rolling hills in the distance, but none were as tall or as majestic as his tree, his very own magic tree house. His world was perfect, a patch work of purples and hot pinks and light red that stretched out like a rainbow.
Bobby, a CPS student in Hong Kong,
Squeezed his eyes firmly shot.
Ms. Lee’s voice faded like a passing shower.
Hovy booked himself to the zip line and whizzed to the ground. Suddenly, Hovy remembered that he had forgotten the blue daisies. He hurried back up the tree house ladder, hooked himself onto the zip-line, and zoomed over to his greenhouse. Hovy started digging a small oval hole beside the greenhouse and he noticed something gold and shimmering at the base of the hole, a golden doll house. Hovy leaned in. He opened the doll house. And inside, he saw a tiny golden ring of white drawn around the closed eyes of a baby bird dinosaur.
Carefully, Hovy lifted the flower pot, the sleeping baby bird dinosaur and all, moving like the wind, rushed back into his tree house. Hovy had noticed a water symbol on the chest of the dinosaur, a shimmering band of white. He realized the water symbol meant that this incredible creature was from an extremely rare waterfall in the province of Liaoning only visited by the gods.
Bobby squeezed his eyes tighter.
In his mind he created golden wings
with sequins which rippled in the
gentle breeze for Hovy.
Hovy felt a tickling feeling on his shoulders and suddenly golden wings which were covered in sequins bloomed. “Oh…..”, Hovy scooped up the baby, bird_dinosaur. “To the water full!” Hovy beat his wings and he rose into the sky, higher and higher, until soon they were in the clouds, clouds as soft and fluffy like white cotton candy. The sunlight was mesmerizing. The sun looked like a giant orange yoyo and Hovy had to squint to block out the fierce rays.
In the distance Hovy saw a waterfall, the crystal water flowing into the clouds. He placed the baby bird dinosaur into the water. Immediately a giant crystal flower formed.
A deep voice spoke: “Petals closing. Please stand clear.”
Suddenly, clicking sounds came from within the petals. The petals pulsed and grew. Slowly, they opened back up. Hovy was wicked. The baby bird dinosaur was the colour of the lake, crystal coloured. The water bird dinosaur, the rarest dinosaur, opened its eyes, looked at Hovy, winked and flew away.
Bobby, wake up!
Ms. Lee’s voice shattered his dreamy fantasy.
Bobby opened his eyes and groaned.
